Goodbye McDonald's french fries.... I hate you!

For the past 1 1/2 years, I have been under the understanding that McDonald's french fries were one of the only things that I could eat at their establishment. Last night, when looking at their allergen list on their website, I found this statement about their fries:

French Fries:

Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*, citric acid [preservative]), dextrose, sodium acid
pyrophosphate (maintain color), salt. Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to
preserve freshness). Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.
CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK *(Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients).

Their OIL contains wheat?? Say WHAT????

I will admit that I was so upset by this statement! For some reason I found myself crying about it. It's not that I love their french fries, but it was an option for me that I used from time-to-time when I took my son for his favorite Chicken Nuggets.

Goodbye....

Gluten Free, homemade corn dogs!!

Here is a recipe for GF homemade corn dogs that I found online and substituted my GF Bisquick (mix) cup for the original Bisquick that it called for:

Ingredients:
- 1 package of your favorite GF hot dogs (I prefer to cut them in half to make mini corn dogs and dust with GF flour to help corn dog mixture to stick)
- 1 cup of GF Bisquick (I use the GF bisquick/shortening mix described in an earlier post)
- 2 TBS. of corn meal
- 1/4 tsp. of paprika
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- Oil for frying (I fried in my deep fryer in peanut oil- I know, I am terrible!) :)

Mix the dry ingredients first, then add in the wet ingredients. Mix with a fork until well blended. One a time using a fork inserted in one end of a hot dog, I coated it by rubbing it around in the mixture until fully covered. I then dropped the hot dog into the oil of my deep fryer, using an additional fork to push it off and into the oil. Fry until golden brown, drain on paper towels, and enjoy!!! :)

GF Garlic Cheese Biscuits (Like the ones at that famous seafood restaurant)

Tonight I made some delicious garlic cheese biscuits like the ones that you can get from that famous seafood restaurant. Delicious!! They turned out so incredibly well.

Crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. :) Check out the link below for the recipe. I substituted regular Bisquick for my modifined GF bisquick mix as mentioned in the post below.

Just ordered some GF pita bread....

I just ordered some GF pita bread from GFL Foods Inc. These pita breads are suppose to be kept frozen until you want to consume one. Then you just pull one out of the freezer and microwave for 45 seconds. This seems easy enough and has received some good reviews, so I figured I would fork out some money and try them for myself.

The cost for one package of six pita breads was $9 plus $10.50 shipping. If I end up liking them, I can order up to 4 packages for the same shipping price.

I'll let you know how they are after I receive them!! I am already planning ways to fill my pita bread!! :)

Review: La Tortilla Factory Ivory Teff Gourmet Wraps

I have been wanting to try La Tortilla Factory Ivory Teff Gourmet Wraps since reading other reviews from gluten-free eaters. After contacting local grocery stores and Whole Foods just to find out they don't carry this product, my husband decided he would surprise me and fork out the extra money to have one package sent to me. He opted not to go the more economical way of ordering multiple packages (saving on shipping), which was a smart thing to do. This one package of 6 tortilla wraps put him back $20 after shipping!

When I received my box from the La Tortilla Factory, I was SO EXCITED to try these wraps. The thought of having a normal'ish tortilla definitely had my attention. Upon taking the bag out of the box, I noticed that of the 6 wraps, only 3 of them were completely in tact. The other ones were ripped or had pieces broken off of them completely. Needless to say, it was the taste that I was going for at this point so a few rips and tears wasn't going to stop me from having something "normal". I opened the bag up and the first thing I noticed was the smell. This wasn't a pleasant smell to me. I then took one of the torn pieces and placed it in my mouth and started eating. I really wanted to enjoy this, but the taste just wasn't right for me. I was bummed.

They have been sitting on my countertop for the past week. After reading one more time about them, I decided I would give them my last attempt and heat them. I made a breakfast burrito using the wraps. Although it wasn't completely terrible, it still wasn't right for me. It still had the aftertaste that I had tasted before, this time muddled by the taste of egg, cheese, bacon, and salsa.

Morale of this story: Not all rave reviews are always going to be a RAVING success for me. (Up to this point, everything I had tried based on reviews was dead on.)
